Where and how does LMNT source its sodium chloride?Updated 7 days ago
LMNT’s salt (sodium chloride) is extracted and produced in Hutchinson, Kansas through an evaporated manufacturing process. This process begins with water being pumped into underground salt deposits. The water dissolves the salt, creating a saturated brine solution within the cavern and is forced back up to the surface.
Once extracted, the brine is boiled, causing the water to evaporate and salt crystals to form. After crystallization occurs, the salt undergoes final processing, which includes drying, centrifuging, screening (to sort for particle size), and packaged for distribution.
Throughout production, the product undergoes stringent testing to meet rigorous food safety and quality standards. Hutchinson, Kansas — or Salt City, as it’s known — is home to salt deposits that were formed about 300 million years ago from a “great inland sea” that has since been covered up with earth. These deposits sit between 500 and 1,000 feet below the Earth’s surface and are regarded as one of the purest deposits for salt (sodium chloride) in the world.
